Call to be Missionaries of Hope

This weekend, Catholics all over the world gather to celebrate Mission Sunday, a day instituted by Pope Pius XI. A special collection is collected to support evangelization efforts globally. October is dedicated to reflecting on and praying for missions.

The Church's mission is to announce God's love, mercy, forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus Christ. Jesus demonstrated this love through His life, suffering, death, and Resurrection. We fulfill this mission by living a truly Christian life, filled with love, mercy, kindness, and compassion. Prayer is essential, as Jesus said, "Without me you can do nothing" (Jn 15:5).

Pope St. John Paul II in his letter on the world mission Sunday 2004, emphasized the fact that the Holy Spirit would help us to become witnesses of Christ only in an atmosphere of prayer. Since missionaries are weak humans. We need to support them with our prayers, trusting in God's care and faithfulness.

The parable of the persistent widow teaches us that persistence can lead to justice and breakthroughs. As we reflect on our baptismal call to be missionaries of hope, we're reminded that we need the support of our faith community to sustain us in prayer and mission. Just as Aaron and Hur supported Moses, the saints and our brothers and sisters in faith can sustain us when our strength fails.

We are all called to be missionaries of hope, spreading the Gospel and serving those in need. This call is not limited to a selected few, but it is a universal invitation to all believers. As missionaries of hope, we can transform communities and bring light to those who are struggling.

Pope Leo's message highlights the transformative power of faith, prayer, and generosity.

In his words, he exhorts:

“I urge every catholic parish in the world to take part in world mission Sunday. Your prayers, your support will help spread the Gospel, provide for pastoral and Catechetical programs, help to build new churches and care for the health and educational needs of our brothers and sisters in mission territories.”

Building on this message, the Catholic Church in every mission Sunday is always committed to supporting a particular struggling church around the world. This year we're encouraged to support the churches and missionaries in Zambia. As we look out for ways to support others through our generosity and prayers, let's remain faithful to Scripture, which provides wisdom and guidance.

May our persistence in prayer, trust in God's timing, and reliance on Scripture guide us on our spiritual journey. Amen
